Interview with Honggeun Seok
I am Seok-jong, a graduate of the VFX Program.
While attending university, I became interested in VFX after taking a 3ds Max course. At first, I did not really know what VFX was, so I faced many challenges and difficulties. Later, I joined the workshop, where I spent time with fellow artists and workshop members, researching and learning together step by step until I was able to complete my work successfully.
When I first joined the workshop, I was very nervous and had difficulty getting along with other people. However, my classmates approached me first, offering advice and help with my work. Thanks to their support, I gradually opened up, and before long, I became so close to them that I felt the workshop members were like family.
Since I wanted to pursue compositing, I decided to focus on a live-action project rather than a mechanical or robot-based piece, which led me to choose a rhinoceros beetle as my subject. I placed the beetle I created alongside a real rhinoceros beetle so that viewers could directly compare the two. As the project progressed, I struggled quite a bit with recreating the material and surface qualities of the beetle's shell. However, thanks to the advice of my workshop friends and the guidance of my instructors, I was eventually able to achieve a much more convincing and realistic result than when I first started.
Everyone experiences creative slumps, and I was no exception. Whenever I found myself in one, I remembered the advice from senior artists: "When you're in a slump, take a break, enjoy yourself, and then come back ready to work hard again." That's exactly what I did, and it helped me overcome those difficult periods. Rather than stressing endlessly when a slump hits, I recommend stepping away for a while, getting some fresh air, and returning once your mind has cleared. CG work can be incredibly demanding, but I hope you continue pushing forward while imagining the skilled CG artist you will become in the years ahead.
Lastly, I would like to sincerely thank all the instructors who helped me throughout the journey, including Instructor Choi, Instructor Kim, Instructor Lim, the Director, the Studio Manager, Instructor Greg, and many others. And to my workshop family—I will never forget you. Let's make sure we meet again even after leaving the workshop! Wishing everyone the best of luck and success in the future. Fighting! 😊
