Interview with Boyeong Jung
This project was created as a team effort. We wanted to make a film about the destruction of nature while incorporating distinctly Korean elements, so we chose a dokkaebi, a traditional Korean goblin-like creature, as the main character.
The dokkaebi serves as an emotional representation of nature, allowing us to express nature’s anger toward humanity. The girl represents humanity’s pure and innocent side, with a genuine love for nature. She also serves as a mediator who resolves the conflict with the dokkaebi and helps reconcile humanity with an angry and wounded nature.
As human beings have continuously damaged the environment through the development of civilization, we built the overall story around the dokkaebi, representing nature’s emotions, becoming angry with humanity and eventually reconciling with it.
The production process followed this order: storyboard → live-action reference shoot → modeling → rigging → texturing → animation → compositing → FX. However, since this was a team project, several stages were also carried out simultaneously and in parallel with one another.
As many students from previous classes have said, the storyboard is extremely important. It is also important to clearly decide which area you want to focus on before starting. This allows you to emphasize the aspects you want to highlight and helps make the overall production process more efficient.
I also recommend setting a clear deadline and creating weekly plans to organize your work. Since it is a long journey, planning and consistently following that plan are essential to maintaining your momentum.
The process will be much more mentally and physically demanding than you might expect. For that reason, I hope you do not begin without being fully prepared for the commitment.
It is important to promise yourself before you begin that you will see your portfolio through to the very end. If you refuse to give up, the finish line will eventually come.
There were many wonderful memories as well as many difficult moments. After experiencing and overcoming all of them, I gained the confidence that I could accomplish almost anything in the future.
I would like to sincerely thank Instructor Im Su-jin for always looking after us and supporting us throughout the process. Thanks to her guidance and dedication, I was able to successfully complete the project.
I was also incredibly fortunate to meet the classmates I studied with. Although the journey was difficult, I am very happy that after more than a year of hard work, we were able to successfully complete it together.
