Interview with Hankyoreh Kang
It all started with the idea that I wanted to create something different from everyone else. I considered subjects such as robots and organic creatures, but I felt that they were not all that different from many other portfolios. Then I happened to notice a small cultivator at Seolleung Park. I thought it would be fun to create something that no one else had made before, so I immediately started working on it.
The production process followed the order of modeling, texturing, animation, lighting, rendering, and compositing.
As my instructors and many students who came before me have emphasized, having a clear concept is extremely important. If you only have a vague idea in your head about what you want to make, you are likely to encounter many problems once you actually start working. As those problems pile up, the production time gets longer, and ultimately, you are the one who has to deal with the consequences.
It is important to establish a clear schedule and plan before starting a project and to define your concept as precisely as possible. When problems arise, having a solid plan makes them much easier to solve. Also, when choosing a specialization for your career, it is important to decide which area you want to pursue and focus your portfolio accordingly. I believe this will help you achieve a stronger final result.
I also hope you don't rush your work too much just because you are running out of time. When you are constantly pressed for time, you may end up with a portfolio that you regret. Of course, I also had to rush toward the end, and there are definitely some things I wish I could have done differently.
When you first start, there may be times when you don't know how to approach something or how to solve a problem, and that can feel overwhelming. When that happens, don't hesitate to ask the people around you. Everyone has a different workflow, and no two projects are exactly the same. Asking several people for advice and finding the best solution from different perspectives is often the most effective approach.
If I had tried to create my portfolio entirely on my own, I might still be working on it even now. Having people around me to study with motivated me, and I was able to learn things I didn't know through one another. I think that is why I am able to write this review today. Working together is simply more fun than working alone.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the instructors who worked so hard to teach and guide students like me, who started with very little knowledge.
The school was also a place where I was able to meet great people, study together, have meals together, help one another, and grow together. Even though I am leaving first, I hope that I can meet everyone again someday as talented CG artists after they have completed their own amazing portfolios.
I wish everyone the very best and continued success in the future.
