Interview with Jaehwan Kim
Hello, my name is Jae-hwan Kim, and I joined the 3D Team at MACROGRAPH.
My connection with SF Film School began after I graduated from university and was working at a company. A friend introduced me to a field I had always been interested in, which eventually led me to SF Film School.
I started studying alongside students from different classes and backgrounds. Some already had experience with 3D, while others had completely unrelated academic backgrounds. We all came together, helped one another, and began learning together.
As we studied and explored different areas, each of us spent a lot of time thinking about which field suited us best. I had always been particularly interested in modeling, so I planned to pursue it as my main area. During the artwork classes, creating a monster sculpture with Sculpey was a great experience, and I also really enjoyed sculpting with ZBrush.
While developing and preparing a concept for my individual portfolio, I was given the opportunity to participate in a team project based on my instructor’s recommendation.
I focused primarily on character development, from creating the character concept art to modeling the characters. After that, I also worked on texturing, rigging, animation, and character shading. Other areas, including planning, compositing, lighting, rendering, and FX, were handled by team members who were interested in and wanted to specialize in those respective areas.
Working as a team allowed us to get to know each other much better, and I experienced both the advantages and challenges compared to working alone. Looking back, I often think that it would have been much more difficult to get through the challenging moments we faced during production without my teammates, who worked hard and supported one another throughout the project.
I am incredibly grateful to my teammates, many of whom I am still close with and keep in touch with today. I would also like to thank SF Film School for teaching me not only about CG, but also many valuable lessons about life.
The most rewarding part of my time at SF Film School was meeting so many wonderful people and building meaningful relationships while studying and working together for such a long time.
To all my friends, younger and older classmates who are now working at various companies, I hope all your hard work pays off and that you achieve your dreams. And to everyone currently studying at SF Film School, I sincerely hope you find the company and the role you have been hoping for.
Thank you.
