Interview with Jisub Park

This portfolio was created with a focus on VFX compositing. I was thinking about how to best showcase compositing through a video, and decided to depict the brief moment of a car accident in slow motion from multiple angles.

First, I created a storyboard, drawing out the scenes and camera compositions I had in mind. Based on the storyboard, I created the previs and modeled the necessary assets. I then filmed the live-action footage according to the previs and edited the footage, including rotoscoping.

After that, I composited the photographs and footage with the modeled assets. Finally, I used After Effects to add various visual effects.

As you continue working on the same scene for a long time, it can become less interesting and feel repetitive. In my case, the first scene using matte work took an enormous amount of time.

When this happened, I found it a little easier to work on other scenes alternately and make gradual progress on each of them.

There will also be many moments during the process when you feel like you have reached your limits. When that happens, I recommend taking time to think things through and actively asking the people around you or your instructors for advice.

I also think that actively accepting feedback from those around you can help make your work even better.

I hope you keep imagining the kind of video you want to create and continue working toward it. If you have a clear goal in mind, I believe you can overcome even the boring or difficult moments along the way.

Also, don’t focus only on your own work. Take the time to look at other people’s projects and interact with them as much as possible. I think you can learn a lot that way.

I wasn’t very good at this myself, but there are many different ways to create the same video. So don’t be afraid to experiment. By testing different approaches and finding better solutions, you can not only improve the quality of your work but also develop your own skills significantly.

It was a time to review what I had learned while also learning new things and truly making them my own.
A place where I could challenge myself while giving and receiving help from the people around me.
A valuable time to create my own work and continue improving.

While working on the project, all I wanted was to finish it as quickly as possible. But after completing it, I feel much more regret about the things I could have done better.

“I should have paid a little more attention to this… I should have tried making it again…”

At the same time, I found myself becoming eager to create something new.

Since SF Film School was a place where I was able to build up so much knowledge, creativity, and technical skill, I think I will remember it for a long time.
