Interview with Jongyoung Cha

I created this portfolio with the goal of pursuing a career in compositing. The concept is about a person who becomes lost while wandering around a small planet and eventually encounters a golem.

The production process followed this order: storyboard → modeling → filming → matte work → mapping → rigging → lighting → rendering → compositing → color correction.

I understand that everyone feels impatient when working on a portfolio. However, as I approached the final stages of my portfolio, I realized that being impatient does not actually help you finish the project any faster. Instead, it made me realize once again how important it is to have a detailed and realistic plan.

Even a carefully planned schedule can change unexpectedly, so if you create a plan full of gaps because you are in a hurry, it can lead to even more delays. I experienced this firsthand. Even when you feel impatient, I believe that approaching the project step by step with the mindset of learning along the way, and creating a realistic plan that you can actually manage, will ultimately lead to a better result.

I think the most important thing is to clearly decide which area you want to focus on before starting the project. I did not clearly define a specific area and instead worked according to whatever I wanted to try. As a result, the project became somewhat ambiguous and difficult to present as a portfolio for a specific field, so I had to spend additional time on revisions and supplementary work.

Having a clear focus and a thorough plan is essential for saving time. Impatience only leads to more revisions and additional work, ultimately causing more delays.

I recommend looking at plenty of reference videos related to the field you want to pursue and listening carefully to your instructors' advice. If you do that, I believe you will be able to complete a great project. Keep fighting, and I sincerely hope you get a job at the company you want! ^^

I think the people in the lab were a great source of motivation for me. Whenever I felt tired or discouraged, seeing the passion and dedication of everyone working in the lab helped me regain my motivation and keep going.

I would also like to thank all the instructors who guided me whenever I was stuck and helped lead my work in a better direction. Thank you so much. ^^

Although I couldn't attend the academy as often because I was preparing my portfolio while attending school, and I didn't get to make as many friends as I would have liked, I don't think I will ever forget this place, which became a major turning point in my journey from drawing to video production.

I know the instructors must have had a difficult time guiding so many students, but thank you for always giving us your best support. And to everyone in the lab who is united by dreams and passion, keep fighting! Let's go!!
