Interview with Minhee Park

This portfolio was inspired by a pencil sharpener. I wanted to reinvent the familiar shape with a fresher and more appealing design, so I transformed it into a robot character. I focused on the visual quality of the project through live-action filming to bring out the character’s presence and personality.

Production process: Storyboard → Concept Design → Modeling → Rigging → Lighting → Rendering → Compositing → Post-production

I believe the first step should be deciding which area you want to pursue before creating the storyboard. Once you clearly understand which techniques are required for that field, it is better to create a storyboard that allows you to incorporate those techniques into your work.

In my case, I started working without deciding which area I wanted to specialize in or understanding what techniques would be required. It was not until the middle of the project that I decided on my direction and understood the necessary techniques, which resulted in me having to discard about half of my original storyboard.

For this reason, I recommend carefully considering which area you want to focus on during the regular training program before entering the PFX Lab.

I also hope you never forget to appreciate the instructors who treat your work as if it were their own and genuinely support you throughout the process.

I believe this was a place that helped me overcome more than half of the fear, anxiety, and worries I had about not being able to complete a project on my own. Whenever I faced a difficult challenge during production and felt that something was impossible, the instructors were always there to help as if it were their own work. When I was emotionally exhausted, my seniors from the 154th class were there for me, and being able to talk with them and encourage each other helped me keep going.

I am leaving with many valuable lessons, wonderful people I met along the way, and meaningful memories that I will cherish.
