I focused more on the compositing visuals than on the story itself.
Production process: storyboard → modeling → texturing → rigging → animation → lighting → rendering → compositing
The most important skill is the ability to solve problems that arise during production. Many unexpected issues occur throughout the process. When an instructor for the relevant field is available, you can ask questions and move forward quickly. However, when the instructor is not available, finding someone who can help can take more time than expected.
In my case, I researched and solved problems throughout the process, from modeling to final rendering, by searching online and studying reference videos. When I encountered problems during compositing, I worked through them step by step, starting with the smaller issues. I believe developing the ability to solve problems independently will ultimately benefit you more.
Before entering the lab, I think it is more important to have a clear understanding of the field you want to pursue than to focus only on the storyboard. If you plan your storyboard without fully understanding the requirements of your chosen field, there is a very high chance that you will have to redo it later.
When planning your storyboard, I recommend watching plenty of reference videos. It is also very important to save and back up your files frequently while working.
If the regular classes teach you the fundamentals, I think the lab is where you learn how to apply those fundamentals in practice. It is also a place where instructors review areas of your work that you may have overlooked and help you develop a project that is truly your own.
It is also a place where you can stay motivated by watching your classmates work hard and share useful information with one another.
