Interview with Sejin Song
Hello, my name is Song Se-jin, and I am a graduate of the VFX Program.
My journey began when I was 15 years old. I was amazed by how a single photograph could be transformed into something beautiful and impressive through digital tools or drawing. At that time, I knew very little about computer graphics and had almost no understanding of the field. The first software I downloaded and taught myself was Photoshop 6.0. I have always loved movies, and watching Transformers left a huge impression on me. It was such a powerful experience that it made me wonder whether I could one day become someone who contributes to filmmaking. That curiosity eventually led me to study VFX, and now I am thrilled to have completed my portfolio and become qualified to apply to post-production studios.
When I first encountered 3D graphics, I was intimidated because it was completely different from 2D design. However, through daily classes at the school, the subject gradually became more approachable and familiar. More importantly, I was able to complete my portfolio thanks to the encouragement, inspiration, and support of my classmates, workshop members, and instructors.
When I began planning my portfolio project, I was heavily inspired by the visual style of games such as Call of Duty and Company of Heroes. I was drawn to their cinematic atmosphere and started watching films and television series related to World War II in order to capture that same sense of depth and realism. Ironically, while war represents tragedy and fear, I also found a unique artistic beauty in the imagery and storytelling associated with it. This inspiration led me to create a portfolio centered around the Sherman tank, one of the most widely produced tanks of World War II.
While searching for a suitable location, I discovered the Hapcheon Image Theme Park in South Korea, which provided the perfect setting for my project. As I imagined how the tank would appear within the environment, I filmed the background footage and then created the tank through 3D production, processed various assets, and completed the final compositing work.
Every step of this process helped me gain a deeper understanding of VFX and allowed me to truly make the knowledge my own. To everyone beginning this journey, I hope you never lose sight of the dreams and passion that brought you here in the first place.
Wishing all of you the very best—good luck, and keep moving forward! 😊
